How to conduct a Self-Care Audit and how it can change your life!

Ferris Bueller hit the nail on the head when he said "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it."

The same applies for your own health & wellness and especially your self-care. Self-care is all over the place these days with images of bubble baths and meditations and while yes, those are important self-care is so much more!

It's about the daily thoughts, actions, and micro actions you can be taking (or not taking) that can have a huge impact on your stress, happiness, health, and mental wellbeing.

So today I'm writing this blog post for YOU!

The human being who has suddenly realized (and come to accept) that life feels a bit too chaotic lately and that something bigger, simpler, and easier needs to come through.

Ever wonder why it feels like you can’t make time for yourself? The idea of “you time” seems impossible and when you DO have the time and the energy, you don’t always take action to do the things you know you really need to do?

The truth is that there’s one big thing that’s been holding you back for a while:

The notion that you need MORE (ideas, hacks, inspiration) before you can really start to take action and ownership of your life and a worry that you don’t have enough of the right information

When really what you need is LESS

  • Less self-doubt
  • Less self-criticism
  • Less worry, judgement
  • Less mental clutter and chaos taking up all your brain space and draining your energy from the inside out

All of that information jam packed into your head would make anyone feel unsure or how to move forward and unclear of how committed they can really be

It’s not because of a lack of motivation or willpower, either.

It’s because it’s damn near impossible to feel aligned and take the actions we know we need to take when we feel overwhelmed, drained, and resentful of our day-to-day habits

The good news is that there’s an amazing way to clear everything you need out of your mind and RECLAIM that inner abundance of energy

To be in a space day to day where you can easily say “don’t want to give a fuck about that” and let it go

*exhale* aaahhh it already feels good doesn’t it?

It's all about taking time to conduct a self-care audit and before you get all "ew audit sounds so official and financial" - let me breakdown what I mean when I use that term.

To audit your self-care simply means to take inventory of what's going on for you, what's showing up, what's become a priority for you maybe without you even realizing it, what micro habits you're doing (or not doing) that are fueling stress and shitty situations, and so on.

It's an AMAZING way to liberate your mind, calm your body, and free your soul. Truly <3

So how does it work?

Let's walk through the 3 main components of setting up and conducting a self-care audit for yourself...

1) Get out a journal and take note of how you feel

I'm not just talking about "I'm fine" either. I mean how does your body feel, how overwhelmed is your mind, what's the most pressing issue or worry that's taking up all your mental energy?

Questions to get you started:

  • How is your energy level when you first wake up in the morning?
  • What feels absent in your life?
  • How often do you find yourself taking deep breaths?
  • When was the last time you laughed so hard your stomach hurt?

The list goes on. Starting here can be a powerful way to check in with yourself. I dive into this even deeper and give you a worksheet to guide you through the entire process in my FREE Self-Care Audit Mini Course.

2) Do a free write and give yourself FULL permission to be with your emotions and the reality of your current way of being

What do I mean by this? I mean really fully and HONESTLY give yourself permission to feel your life, your existence, and how things are going for you. In this positivity-obsessed culture, we often don't give ourselves time to fully express how we feel and in turn it gets bottled up and held onto. Holding space to really feel things, recognize things, and call awareness to them is what helps us release them,

3) Make a list of things that are both DRAINING your energy and things you seriously hate doing (then see how you can stop doing them or do them less often).

Seems obvious right? Stop doing things that suck? Truth is we all hand fucks out in places that we aren't aware of. We say "yes" to doing things we deep down don't want to do but we do anyway out of obligation or the belief that the person we're doing them for needs us to.

Likewise, we think we need to care about everyone and everything to be a decent, ethical, and good human being.

Newsflash: If you give everything you'll get nothing

So why is this all so important and life-changing?

It may sound simple but getting clear on how you're feeling, making time to check in, and truly letting go of things that no longer serve you allows you to show up in powerful ways for both yourself and everyone else in your life.
